Hairline, temples, crown: why one number hides three

An overall score of 72 might be 72, 72, 72 — or 85, 72, 59. Those are completely different situations, and only one number is shared between them.

The three regions

Hairline

The border across the front. The part you see every day, straight on, in every mirror and every photograph anyone takes of you. You have more informal data on this than on anything else about your head.

Temples

The two corners where the front border turns and meets the sides. Usually the first region to move, and usually the first thing anyone notices about their own head — the classic "matured hairline" step happens here.

Crown

The whorl at the top-back, where the hair spirals out from a point. Invisible to you without two mirrors or a second person. It moves on its own schedule, unrelated to what the front is doing.

Why averaging them loses the information

A single overall number is a summary, and summarising three independent readings into one destroys the only thing that was actionable about them: which one moved.

If your overall score drops four points between scans, that could be all three zones easing down slightly — or two zones flat and one zone dropping twelve. The first is a slow, even drift. The second is one region doing something the others are not. Those call for entirely different next photographs, and the overall number cannot tell them apart.

This is also the specific weakness of a whole-head classification like the Norwood scale: one label per head, and heads do not change one region at a time.

Four ways the zones disagree, and what each means

Temples lowest, hairline holding

The most common pattern by a distance. The corners round off while the front border stays where it is. Watch the gap between the two readings over time rather than either number — if the temples keep dropping while the hairline holds, that is a shape changing at the corners, which is a different thing from a border retreating.

Crown lowest, front fine

The pattern that goes unnoticed longest, for the obvious reason: nobody sees their own crown. If your crown reads below your front zones, the useful response is not alarm — it is that the crown is now the zone worth photographing properly every month, because it is the one carrying new information.

Hairline lowest, temples above it

Unusual, and worth a second look at the photo before you believe it. A front border reading below the corners is often an artifact: chin tilted down, overhead light casting a shadow across the front, or hair pushed back off the face in a way that exposes the border. Retake the photo under controlled conditions before treating this as a finding.

All three within a few points

Two possibilities, and they are not equally good news. Either the head really is even — or the photo did not give enough information to separate the zones, and they have converged toward each other for lack of evidence. Check the scan's confidence and whether every zone was actually marked visible. Genuine agreement and insufficient detail look identical in the numbers.

The rule for reading zones

Read in this order

  1. Which zones were readable at all. A blank is information, not a missing value.
  2. The lowest scored zone. That is the one the photograph is telling you about.
  3. The gap between zones, and whether it is widening across scans.
  4. The overall number, last. It is a summary of the above and contains nothing the above does not.

Nearly everyone reads that list backwards, starting with the overall score and often stopping there. It is the least informative number on the screen.

How Crown separates them

Crown scores the three zones independently, each 0–100, and each can come back blank on its own. The temples may be read from the hairline shot, since both are in the front-facing frame. The crown may only be read from a top or back view — from a front photo it returns a blank, never an inference.

The overall Hair Score is then computed only across the zones that were actually scored. Which is exactly why it should be read last: if one zone was blank this month and scored last month, the overall number is summarising two different sets, and comparing them directly compares different things.

Common questions

What is the difference between a receding hairline and crown thinning?

They are different regions that change independently. A receding hairline is the front border moving back, most often starting at the temple corners. Crown thinning is at the whorl on the top-back of the head. One can happen without the other, and neither predicts the other.

Why does my hairline score differently from my crown score?

Because they are separate measurements of separate regions, taken from separate photographs. They are expected to differ, and the difference between them is usually more informative than either number alone.

Which zone should I pay attention to?

The lowest one that was actually readable, and the crown in general — it is the only region you cannot check in a mirror, so it is the only one where a photograph tells you something you did not already know.

Can Crown score my crown if I only take one photo?

No. The crown is scored only from a top or back view. With just a front photo, the crown zone comes back blank, along with the two metrics that need that angle.
