Why the same head scores differently in two photos
Six things can change your reading in thirty seconds. The seventh — your actual hair — takes months. If a number moved a lot since last week, the arithmetic says which one it probably was.
The ranking
Ranked by how much each one moves an appearance reading, largest first.
Light direction. Overhead light rakes down through the front of the hair and casts scalp shadow behind it; light from in front fills the same hair in. This alone can be the difference between a photo that looks fine and a photo that looks alarming, taken sixty seconds apart in the same room.
Wet versus dry. Wet hair collapses into separated clumps with scalp between them. A wet head reads thinner than the same head dry, every time, by a lot. Never compare across this.
Chin tilt and camera height. A few degrees of tilt rotates the top of the head toward or away from the lens, changing how much scalp is presented to it. You cannot feel this happening.
How the hair is sitting. Pushed back, fallen forward, product in it, slept on, just brushed, parted a few millimetres differently. At the crown, the part is the single biggest offender.
Lens and distance. The ultra-wide lens at close range enlarges whatever is nearest it, which at arm's length is your forehead. Switching lenses between scans changes your face's geometry, not your hair.
Image processing. Beauty and smoothing modes remove exactly the fine strand detail being measured. Portrait mode has to guess where hair ends and blurs the boundary it guessed at.
Your actual hair. Real, and the reason you are doing any of this — but slow. It changes over months.
The inference that follows
Items 1 through 6 can change completely in the time it takes to walk into a different room. Item 7 cannot change meaningfully in less than months.
So when a reading moves sharply between two scans taken days or weeks apart, the probabilities are not evenly distributed across those seven causes. Almost all of the available explanation sits in the first six. A large short-term move is a statement about your photographs.
This is not a way of dismissing a bad number. It is the opposite: it is what lets a number mean something. If you cannot rule out the photo, then every reading is ambiguous and none of them are worth having. Control the first six and the seventh becomes visible.
Rescanning the same evening
The most common thing people do after a result they did not like is take another photo immediately. It feels like checking. It is not checking.
Two scans an hour apart differ in lighting, tilt, and how the hair has settled — and differ in your hair by nothing at all, because hair does not change in an hour. Whatever gap appears between those two numbers is a pure measurement of your photography, with the biology held at zero.
There is a genuinely useful version of this, though. If you deliberately take three photos in a row under conditions you tried to keep identical, the spread between them tells you how noisy your own setup is. If they land within a couple of points, your protocol is tight and a future move of ten points means something. If they are fifteen points apart, you have learned that your setup cannot resolve a fifteen-point change, which is worth knowing before you interpret one.
Compare like with like, or don't compare
The whole rule
A trend line built from photos taken under a fixed protocol is a trend line about your hair. A trend line built from whatever photo you happened to take that day is a graph of your lighting.
Both look identical on screen. Only one of them is worth acting on.
What the scoring does and does not protect you from
Crown anchors every score to fixed bands specifically so that one photograph lands in the same place on a repeat run rather than drifting. That handles the scoring end.
It does nothing whatsoever about two different photographs. If the light moved, Crown is correctly measuring a different image — the reading is not wrong, it is answering a different question. No scoring method can recover information that was not in the frame, and any product that claims its number is immune to your lighting is claiming something a camera cannot support.
Crown does report a confidence of low, medium or high with each scan, and low confidence means the read was limited by lighting or angle. Treat a low-confidence scan as a prompt to fix the photo rather than as a data point to plot.
The fix is upstream, and it is the same fix every time: hold the five variables still.
Common questions
Why does my hair look thinner in some photos than others?

Why did my hair score change between two scans?
If the scans were days or weeks apart, almost certainly the photograph rather than your hair. Lighting, chin tilt, lens choice, wetness and how the hair was sitting can all change instantly; hair itself changes over months.
Should I rescan if I don't like my result?
Rescanning the same evening measures your photography, not your hair — hair does not change in an hour. It is worth taking a few photos in a row to learn how much your own setup varies, but treat that spread as noise in your protocol rather than as new information about your hair.
How often should I scan?
About monthly. Scanning more often than your hair changes means the differences you see are dominated by variation in lighting and angle.
Can an app correct for bad lighting?
Not reliably, and any product claiming its number is unaffected by your lighting is claiming something a photograph cannot support. What a good app can do is tell you when the read was limited and ask for a better photo.
