What hair density actually means
Three different properties get called "density", and confusing them is why people describe changes that sound contradictory. They are not contradictory. They are different measurements.
Three properties, three different things
How many hairs occupy a given area of scalp. Follicular units per square centimetre. This is a count. Measuring it properly requires magnification against a marked, usually clipped patch of scalp — an instrument pressed against the skin, not a photograph taken across a room.
How thick each individual strand is. Measured in microns, and usually described in words: fine, medium, coarse. A head can keep every follicle it has while the strands coming out of them get finer.
How much scalp is hidden, in practice. This is the visible result of density and calibre together, plus length, curl, colour contrast against your skin, how it is styled and which way it lies. It is the only one of the three you can actually see.
Why the distinction matters to you personally
Because it explains the observation that people most often talk themselves out of: "my hair feels thinner but my hairline hasn't moved."
That is not paranoia and it is not a contradiction. A hairline is a border — it is about shape. Thinning that happens through calibre, evenly, across an area, changes coverage without moving the border at all. The two things are measuring different properties, so they can disagree, and when they disagree the person who lives in the head is often noticing something real before any outline has changed.
It runs the other way too. Coarse strands can hold coverage looking respectable over a genuinely reduced count, because thick hairs hide more scalp each. Two heads with the same count can look meaningfully different, and a Norwood stage cannot distinguish them — the scale traces the outline and does not weigh what is inside it.
What a phone photo can and cannot do
The honest boundary
A photograph taken at arm's length under room light cannot count follicles. It has neither the magnification nor the fixed geometry. What it can do is estimate coverage — the impression of fullness — reasonably well, because coverage is a property of the image in a way that a count is not.
Any app that reports a true density figure in hairs per square centimetre from an ordinary phone photo is reporting more than the photo contains.
This is worth knowing before you compare two products. "Density: 68" sounds precise and authoritative. Whether it is a count or an impression of fullness is the entire question, and the answer changes what the number is good for.
How Crown handles it

Strand calibre is reported as a word rather than a number on purpose. A three-way band is what the evidence in a phone photo supports; a two-decimal micron figure would be invented precision, and invented precision is the thing that makes a number stop being believable.
All four go blank rather than guess when the angle they need is missing — coverage and show-through both require the crown shot.
The practical upshot
When you are tracking, track coverage and accept that is what you are tracking. It is the honest name for what a camera sees, it is the thing that actually determines how your hair looks to you in a mirror, and it responds to real change. Just do not mistake it for a follicle count, and do not compare your coverage reading to someone else's — coverage depends on your hair colour against your skin tone, which is not a property of how much hair you have.

What is the difference between hair density and hair thickness?
